This is only a summary of the policy. The full terms and conditions of the cover can be found in the policy document.
It is important that you read the policy document carefully when you receive it. You should also refer to your policy schedule, which indicates the operative section and any endorsements that apply to your own policy.


Statement of Demands and Needs

This product meets the demands and needs of those who wish to ensure that in the event of their buildings and/or contents being lost or damaged against a range of specified events such as fire, theft and weather related losses throughout the duration of the policy, that their claims will be met.The decision to take this product is entirely the customer's and therefore we cannot offer you a personal opinion or recommendation to take it.

Type of Insurance and cover: Household Insurance.

Select from Buildings and/or Contents, each with the option of adding accidental damage cover.
Personal Possessions cover can be added to Contents cover.
Sums insured are index-linked monthly to keep pace with inflation.

Part A: Contents

What is covered - Significant Features and Benefits

Cover is provided for an extensive list of perils including fire, storm, flood, subsidence, theft, etc. These are listed in full in the policy document. In addition cover is provided for:

  • accidental damage to home entertainment equipment;
  • accidental breakage of mirrors and glass;
  • replacement locks if keys are lost or stolen (up to £500);
  • liability for credit card losses as a result of theft from the home (up to £1,000);
  • loss of oil and metered water (up to £1,000)
  • contents removed to the garden (up to £1,000)
  • contents temporary removed from the home (up to 20% of the sum insured for contents for any one claim);
  • alternative accommodation following an insured loss (up to 20% of the sum insured for contents for any one claim);
  • loss or damage to documents (up to £250);
  • loss or damage to visitors personal effects (up to £1,000);
  • automatic 10% increase in sum insured for gifts and provisions for Christmas and family weddings;
  • spoilage of food in freezers (up to £1,000);
  • loss or damage to business equipment (up to £5,000); any one item (£2,000)
  • liability to domestic staff (up to £10,000,000);
  • tenant's liability (up to 20% of contents sum insured for any claim or series of claims);
  • public liability (up to £2,000,000).

What is not covered - Significant and unusual exclusions or limitations

  • Loss or damage when your home is unoccupied or unfurnished for more than 30 consecutive days
  • Theft by anyone lawfully in your home
  • Theft of pedal cycles and money unless there has been forcible and violent entry to or exit from the home
  • Loss of or damage to valuables or money, plants and trees in your garden
  • Theft of contents temporarily removed from the home, unless there has been forcible and violent entry to or exit from a building
  • Loss or damage to documents used for business, trade or professional purposes
  • Loss or damage to frozen food resulting from a deliberate act
  • Liability to the public for any loss or damage involving any mechanically propelled vehicle, aircraft or watercraft. or ownership, possession or use of an animal of a dangerous species
  • Valuables limit within the home up to 1/3rd of sum insured, £2,500 for any one item, money £500

Part B: Contents additional cover option

What is covered - Significant Features and Benefits

  • Accidental loss or damage to contents whilst in the home
  • Accidental loss or damage to contents whilst in the course of removal by professional removers

What is not covered - Significant and unusual exclusions or limitations

  • Anything specifically excluded under Part A: Contents
  • Loss or damage caused whilst the home is unoccupied or unfurnished
  • Loss of computer data
  • Loss or damage to food, drink, plants and contact lenses

Part C: Personal Possessions

What is covered - Significant Features and Benefits

  • Loss or damage to valuables, money and personal effects anywhere in Europe; and anywhere in the world for up to 60 days
  • Liability for losses under credit card or cash dispenser card agreements as a result of unauthorised use.

What is not covered - Significant and unusual exclusions or limitations

  • Loss or damage arising from the cost of remaking any film disc or tape.
  • Theft from an unlocked hotel room
  • Loss or damage to watercraft, aircraft, caravans, trailers, pedal cycles and mechanically propelled vehicles
  • Loss or damage to any property used for business, trade or professional purposes
  • Theft of pedal cycles while away from home unless in a building or locked to an immovable object
  • Loss or damage where property is obtained using any form of payment, which proves to be counterfeit, or uncollectable
  • Loss or damage to personal possessions left in the home if the home is left unoccupied or unfurnished
  • Theft from unattended road vehicles unless contained in locked concealed luggage boot compartment or glove compartment following forcible and violent entry to a securely locked vehicle (up to £1,000)
  • The cost of replacing any undamaged items, which form part of a set, suite or items of a uniform nature

Part D: Buildings

What is covered - Significant Features and Benefits

Cover is provided for an extensive list of perils such as fire, storm, flood, subsidence, theft, etc. These are listed in full in the policy document. In addition cover is provided for:

  • alternative accommodation following an insured loss; (up to 20% of the sum insured for buildings)
  • accidental damage to fixed glass, sanitary fixtures and underground services;
  • damage caused by emergency entry;
  • costs of tracing and accessing leaks in underground pipes and cables (up to £5,000);
  • the buyer when you are selling your home;
  • your legal liability as owner of your home. (up to £2,000,000)

What is not covered - Significant and unusual exclusions or limitations

  • Losses from escape of oil or water, or from theft, vandals, or breakage of glass and sanitary ware whilst your home is unfurnished, or is unoccupied for more than 30 consecutive days
  • Loss or damage from tree felling or lopping
  • Cost of replacing keys and locks to garages and outbuildings

Part E: Buildings additional cover option

What is covered - Significant Features and Benefits

  • Accidental damage to the Buildings.

What is not covered - Significant and unusual exclusions or limitations

  • Anything specifically excluded under Part D: Buildings
  • Damage by wet or dry rot, frost or wear and tear
  • Whilst your home is unfurnished, or is unoccupied for more than 30 consecutive days
  • Certain loss or damage caused by you, paying guests or tenants
  • Liability as occupier of your home but this can be insured under the Contents cover
  • Damage due to a faulty workmanship, defective design or materials. In particular there is no cover for damage to underground services that do not work because they are worn out.

Period of Insurance

The length of time covered is shown in the Schedule and is only for twelve continuous months.

Charges

In addition to the premiums charged by insurers we make the following charges:

Duplicate documents £25.00
All mid-term adjustments £25.00
Cancellation of the policy within the first 14 days If you call us or write to us within the 14 days to confirm cancellation we will make a charge for the time you have been on cover plus £20.00.
Cancellation of the policy after the first 14 days Your policy is a contract for 12 months. If your insurance is cancelled for any reason after the first 14 days the following charges will be applied in addition to the charge made by your insurer for the cover you have had.

There will be no return of premium if a claim has been made during the current year of insurance. If you pay by instalments, please also refer to your credit agreement. There will be no refund on Premium Legal Protection, Family Legal Protection
Other charges that may apply If you are paying your premium by monthly instalments on Direct Debit we reserve the right to apply a charge of £25 for any unsuccessful collection of a monthly instalment.
Payment by Credit Card – A £5.00 charge will apply if any premium is paid by Credit Card. No charge will be made if payment is made by any other method.

Claims

You must report immediately any accident or incident that may give rise to a claim under the policy, to the administrator, BDML Connect Ltd on 0800 008 6709.

Complaints

If you wish to make a complaint please contact the Administrator first by calling our Customer Services Team on 0844 800 8538; or you can write to The Quality Manager, BDML Connect Limited, The Connect Centre, Kingston Crescent, Portsmouth, PO2 8QL.

If you remain dissatisfied with BDML Connect Limited’s response or your complaint is about your insurer you may write to the insurer. If the insurer is a Lloyd’s syndicate you can write to the Complaints Department, Lloyd’s, One Lime Street, London EC3M 7HA.
If you are still dissatisfied after receiving a final response letter then you can refer the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service, South Quay Plaza, 183 Marsh Wall, London E14 9SR. Full details will be made available at the appropriate stage of the complaints process, but are set out in the policy booklet.

Financial Services Compensation Scheme

If we or your insurer were unable to meet our obligations you might be entitled to compensation under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). Further information about the Scheme is available from the FSCS website at www.fscs.org.uk or by calling us.
